How to Make Your Own Cookie Cutters

There are a LOT of tools that bakers use. It's frustrating sometimes because it's either a) ridiculously expensive for a one-time-only use, or b) it's not exactly how you need it to be. Case in point: cookie cutters. Cookie cutters can be expensive for a single-use purpose and finding the right type (right size and shape) can be difficult most of the time.

I'm preparing for a personal project this week and I need a topsy-turvy necktie and a weird square-ish cookie cutter. Now, I'd just be really lucky if I ever find the right for-this-purpose-only cutters I need. I need to find an alternative - I have to make them!

The good news are: a) homemade cookie cutters are easy and inexpensive to make and b) learning how to make them opens a door of possibilities for your cookies!

Materials Needed

All you need are the following: a pair of scissors/kitchen shears, a ruler, a marker, a stapler, a foil pan (a slightly used one will do, just wash it very well), and a drawing/printout of your desired cookie cutter shape.

Procedure

Start by cutting the bottom of the pan. Now, cut foil can, and will probably be, very sharp so be careful. If you're using a rectangular pan, cutting the sides off will be enough, but if, like me, you're using a circular pan, you'd want to cut it into a rectangle.

You'd then want to measure 1 inch strips. It'll be helpful to mark the foil first, but be sure to just mark the edges and not draw lines across the entire thing - you don't want traces of marker ink in your cookies later on.

Once you have your strips, get your cookie cutter drawing and start outlining it with the foil. Again, be very careful as the edges can be quite sharp. You can press them against the edge of a table if you want corners or use a pencil/pentel pen if you want curves. You can then seal them/make them longer by stapling the strip/s together.

The Result

I now have a topsy-turvy necktie and a weird square-ish cookie cutter! Now what are these cookie cutters for? It'll be in my next post!;)

Note: It would also be helpful if you outline your drawing with yarn first, then measure the yarn. This is to make sure you have enough foil.:)
